When it comes to breeding betta fish, many people will let you into a little secret; it is not easy! Breeding betta fish is a difficult process which takes a lot of time and patience, but even though it is a difficult task it can be well worth it in the end. Breeding betta fish can not only be an amazing experience, but it can also be turned into a very successful business in your spare time, you can earn extra cash and make sure that your betta offspring go to good homes.

So what are the dos and don'ts of breeding betta fish? Well, the first DO is to find your female betta fish; this is a necessity if you wish to breed bettas! It can be difficult to find female betta fish because they are not as popular are males because they are less colourful and more pet stores don't sell them. However, it is possible to ask your pet store if they have any contacts, or if this fails then you can search the internet and purchase your female betta fish online.

Once you have your female betta fish, here is a big DON'T. Never, ever put your male and female betta fish into the same tank, it is important that you keep the betta fish separate; they are not called Siamese fighting fish for nothing you know! If they are put straight into the same tank then this could result in the death of one or both of your fish. Keep your female in a separate tank until you are ready to breed.

DO make sure that both fish get plenty to eat during this important time. Bettas need plenty of food in order to begin mating because this is what they would do in their natural habitat. DON'T over feed your bettas though; this could result in illness and even death of your fish.

DO watch for signs so that you can tell when your betta fish are ready to breed. You will notice that the male fish will begin to build a bubble nest at the top of the tank and the female will grow bigger as she produces eggs, when you notice these signs then it is time for the breeding process to begin! Place the female betta fish in with the male but DON'T leave them unattended. DO look out for signs that the female is in trouble or if there is a lot of violence and if this happens then stop the breeding immediately and remove the female from the tank.

DON'T give up though! Just because the fish didn't breed on the first attempt, doesn't mean that it will never work! DO try again until they appear to be hugging each other, when the male wraps his tail around the female. But remember to remove the female as soon as the breeding has finished, her involvement is over once she has released her eggs.
